When you are in high school or college there are certain things that show accomplishment, and kudos for a job well done in the sports field the letterman sweater or jacket is an award for excellence. First used in 1865 the Harvard baseball team added old English ‘H’embroidered on their gray flannel shirt. The football team followed using an ‘H’ These shirts were used as an award for certain players who played in the important games therefore this may have been the beginning of the varsity letter as an award. The letterman sweater was first used regularly in 1891. The date that letterman sweaters were used in high schools is unclear.
