Jamaica Men’s Volleyball Team Sets Goals for Olympics
David Jack, head coach of Jamaica’s men’s volleyball team, expressed his disappointment that they were not qualified for the FIVB NORCECA World Championship’s third round. Nevertheless, he said the letdown is not going to keep them from aiming for the Olympics, whether in 2012 or further in 2016.
Jack, who was once a national volleyball player and captain, spoke at the conclusion of Jamaica’s finals of the second round qualifiers held at the National Indoor Sports Centre and said that the team only needs to continue their hard work since there is a great deal of talent among them.
He said that not qualifying for the third round was a setback but it was not holding them back from achieving their ultimate target to reach the Olympics. Scoring three to one, the team placed third at the qualifiers following their win against the Cayman Islands.
The teams that placed first and second, Mexico and The Bahamas, respectively, will make their way to the third round of the qualifiers.
Jack said that their short-term aim for the Olympics is 2012 and the long-term is 2016. The goals may be a little ambitious but not at all impossible to achieve as the members of the talented team are mostly under the age of 30.
He explained that the standard age of players who take part in the Olympics range from mid- to late thirties. With a sport such as volleyball, experience is an advantage. So by the time the qualifiers come around, his team will definitely perform at their best.
