Effective people management skills are crucial in order to achieve the best in your business success. You can succeed in improving in these techniques. It can be a plus to have a natural affinity for people, but there are a lot of things you can do that will help the process. Relationship Development: Begin by remembering an individual’s name. Speak to employees; look co-workers in the eye as you’re speaking. Have a respectful attitude, also pay attention to what the other individual has to say, even if you don’t agree or have another opinion. Paying attention to everything employees say is one of the best talent management skills you can learn. Be sure to welcome any contributions from your team members. Exhibit integrity: Keeping your word is key. When you don’t deliver on what you promise, the delicate bond of trust is shattered, and without trust your staff certainly won’t perform at their best. Everytime you give a commitment or give a promise, you are squandering your time unless you keep your promises. To be frank, when you can’t be depended on, you can be assured they will behave in a similar fashion. Feedback is important: It’s a two way street. Having an open mind regarding other people’s opinions is very important in effective people management. If you are able to prove approachability and receptiveness, you show that you want to hear other people’s feedback, your opinions will be respected in the same way. Bona Fide discussion also furthers creative troubleshooting, innovative methods of accomplishing goals, and strengthens the team dynamic. By allowing the team a voice, every member takes ownership of the project’s outcome. Promote communication: People management techniques come down to one concept – communication. Be approachable, use good listening skills, retain an open mind, and encourage all your staff to express their opinions. Encourage staff not only to communicate to you, but to talk to each other. The growth of a business relies to a great extent on the interchange of opinions, and in listening to each other, it’s easy to discover problems at an early stage, and measures may be applied before matters get out of hand. A little effort is required, nevertheless the payoff is worthwhile. By promoting a good team dynamic and by taking heed of your team’s suggestions, you can easily accomplish the best in business success.

It’s thought in more than a few companies that, so long as all of their staff have adequate health & safety instruction, they have got everything required to cope with an emergency. The truth is that, regardless your industry, staff must have far more than a basic education in health & safety and risk assessment. You need to supply your employees with an enthusiastic supervisor, the proper equipment, and last but not least the opportunity to practice.

Each team must have a great supervisor to keep an eye on employee performance, yet this person must also play another role on the floor. The supervisor you employ is required to see their health & safety training as important and be able to encourage other staff to share their excitement. On top of encouraging compliance with health & safety legislation, the supervisor must also make sure that employees perform all work efficiently. This is a tricky task. Excellent product knowledge is an essential in a supervisory job as well as an in-depth experience with safety legislation, the identification of hazards, and emergency assistance techniques. It simply isn’t enough to provide your employees with health & safety instruction. They have to practise risk assessment and the identification of hazards. They need to know how to eliminate hazards not to mention understanding what to do when anything unforeseen happens. Staff are only completely prepared when everything has become a habit.

Proper safety apparatus is equally as important to the well being of your workers as any training. When they do not possess the correct gear or alternatively if staff find that equipment is damaged in a crisis, even the most advanced training will not help them. Regular maintanence of your equipment is a good idea. If something isn’t in perfect condition, make sure it is mended or call out a service engineer as soon as possible.

Make sure you review this superb resource for work safety facts!

Your staff must get good health & safety instruction, however they must have the correct gear, the chance to practise, and a knowledgeable supervisor who can get everyone charged up about being safe at work. And then complying with the safety regulations be established in your business culture instead of something troublesome for staff to think about constantly.

It’s opinion in more than a few companies that, when each and every employee has the necessary level of health and safety instruction, they have got all the experience needed to prevent an incident. The truth is that, regardless your industry, an education in health and safety regulations and risk asessment simply isn’t sufficient. Equipping employees, choosing good supervision and organising regular practise are all essential factors. All teams must have a capable supervisor to observe staff performance, but this individual also needs to perform a much larger purpose on the floor. A supervisor must see their health and safety training as crucial and be able to encourage other people to share their enthusiasm. In addition to following any relevant legislation, the supervisor furthermore must ensure that employees perform all work well. Naturally it isn’t easy to accomplish all this at once. Excellent product knowledge is a must for a supervisory role as well as an in-depth experience with safety legislation, risk assessment, and emergency assistance techniques.

It’s just not enough to send your employees to a health and safety course. They need to practise risk assessment and the recognition of hazards. Staff also need a firm grasp of the essential safeguards that they’ll need to put in place and also understanding what to do when something unforeseen happens. Your employees are only really prepared when all they have been taught has become second nature. Safety equipment is every bit as vital to the your staff’s safety as training. Without the appropriate gear or alternatively if they find out that equipment is broken in a crisis, all the education there is to offer is not going to help them.

It’s a good idea to make frequent inspections to ascertain if you have all the essential equipment and to make sure it’s working correctly as well. If piece of equipment will not meet the applicable legislation, ensure it is mended or serviced as soon as you can.

The right health and safety training is essential for the well being of your staff, but they also require decent gear, scheduled practise sessions, and an educated supervisor who can get the workforce to be enthusiastic about working safely. If you implement these steps you will find that all the safety regulations become established in the culture of your business instead of an inconvenience for staff to remember constantly.

“This is really the kind of music one isn’t supposed to hear, the sort that helps
to fill the empty spots between pauses in a conversation.” Composer Aaron
Copeland

Oh my. I’m so embarrassed. I never thought I’d say this. Not in a million year. Not as
a serious musician. Certainly not as a science-based Learnertainer. But here it is …
nevertheless … I love Muzak.

To explain my statement, we have to start at the beginning: silent films.

A true silent film is a jarring experience because of its lack of warmth.
Camouflaging this silence is one of the important functions of film. Nearly every film
features music over a third of its length. And in a Hollywood environment where
moneymaking sequels matter more than quality, many mediocre films are made
palatable by the addition of popular music. It is also safe to state that like dynamics
hold true in real life. We have proof: Muzak

In 1922 Brigadier General George Owen Squier noticed this function of film music
and decided to apply music to the silences of daily life. In the process he founded
the Muzak company. His idea worked so well that an estimated 100 million people
will be exposed to Muzak on the same day you read this.

One of the reasons for Muzak’s success has to do with its pacing. Muzak selections
are carefully matched to the hour of the day. Peppy melodies and hyper rhythms in
the morning, light pop at lunchtime, mellow songs for mid-afternoon, classic pop at
dinnertime and higher energy selections in the evening.

Additionally, all of Muzak’s programming is arranged into quarter-hour blocks. The
music is designed to match the energy cycles of listeners. At the beginning of a
programming block, the music starts softly. From that point forward, it builds until,
at fifteen minutes, it reaches its peak in volume. It then starts over, repeating this
cycle every fifteen minutes.

Muzak’s researchers state that this “Stimulus Progression” effectively counters
worker fatigue. Various studies have validated that the Stimulus Progression in work
environments:
•	Increases output;
•	Reduces stress;
•	Enhances concentration; and
•	Improves morale.

Muzak’s research even suggests that likeability is largely irrelevant, that it is
possible to achieve increased productivity by playing music that ignores employee
preference but focuses on the function the music is designed to serve.

Trainers, presenters and educators obviously do not want Muzak playing throughout
a learning event. Movies don’t feature continuous background music either. Instead,
program leaders can selectively use music to camouflage silence at specific
moments in any program. What follows are some examples that make you too love
Muzak.

Play music when many people converse at once – The noise made by large groups
tasked with talking simultaneously can be deafening. Music can take the edge off of
the sound. In a crowded room, music acts much like lemon to a plate of fish.
Lemon, when sprinkled on the fish, cuts the odor. Music, when played softly in the
background of discussion periods, cuts the noise.

Play music during small group discussions – In small group discussions learners
who are sitting near, and in some cases, next to each other are placed in different
groups. Music, when used in these situations, functioning as a masking agent, adds
a layer of sound that prevents learners from eavesdropping on other conversations
and allows them to focus on their own group.

Play music during solo reflection periods – When learners are asked to reflect on a
subject any sound can disrupt their thoughts. Much as silent film theaters used
house bands to cover up crowd and projector noise, light, slow, reflective music
serves as a buffer between individual coughs and whispers. An additional bonus is
the fact that slow, reflective music helps learners think.

Play music during creative visioning exercising – New Age or Impressionistic music,
used during brainstorming exercises, provides learners with musical anchors they
can attach their thoughts to.

Play music while practicing repetitive tasks – Repetitive tasks are made easier by
music. If you exercise you may already know this to be true. Our bodies have a
rhythm. Our heart beats, we breathe in and out and our blood pulses, all in time.
Some amazing feats have been accomplished by tying tasks to music. African slaves,
for instance, used work chants to survive the backbreaking work of picking cotton.
The workmen who built the transcontinental railroad sang as they drove spikes into
the rails. The soldiers who fought for our freedom sang as they marched hundreds
of miles.

If your trainees are required to learn repetitive tasks, music with a steady beat can
help. Studies demonstrate that music helps learners:
•	Repeat monotonous tasks with higher levels of interest
•	Work longer;
•	Elongate attention spans;
•	Improve task concentration;
•	Increase task speed; and
•	Build consistency.
Simply select a piece of music that pulses at a speed complementary to the task at
hand.

Play music during breaks – The lack of an audio signal during breaks can undercut
any comfortable atmosphere you may have built. Instead of allowing this silence to
linger, select and play music appropriate to the instruction that just occurred. If
your learners are all keyed up and you feel the need to calm them down, play some
slower, reflective music. If the just ended segment required intense concentration,
play up-tempo music to help your learners unwind. As the break reaches its halfway
point, switch music. Play selections more appropriate to the segment you will soon
begin. One minute before the break ends, turn the music up to indicate that the
learners should return, and then, turn it off when you are ready to start.

Play music during reviews – Giorgi Lozanov, the father of Suggestopedia and
accelerated learning created what he called concerts. Lozanov believed that
suggestion is more easily accepted when a student is deeply relaxed, both mentally
and physically. To achieve this level of relaxation in his learners, his reviews would
include deep breathing exercises, a comfortable and relaxed position, a calm,
pleasant atmosphere, a background of classical music, and the recitation of critical
information.

Lozanov would recite, or have the trainees recite the key learning points
accompanied by slow Baroque or early Classical period music, pulsing at a rate
parallel to that of the human heart, around 60 to 80 beats per minute. By placing
key review points into a PowerPoint presentation timed to music, any trainer can use
this relaxation technique.

As the applications listed above suggest, Muzak, drawing inspiration from film
music, has pointed the way towards effective learning. So, reluctantly, in spite of the
way Muzak annoys me, I must state … unfortunately … I love Muzak.

Write it down, are you kidding? No one could ever get me to commit like that. A Mission statement is for business or so I thought…

Can you imagine taking a boat, loading it up with supplies and stripping out the compass and all the communication equipment and then heading out to sea with no idea of where you are going?

This is what most of us do, both in our businesses and in our personal life. We think about what we want, take our best shot and then head out into the wild blue yonder hoping for the best. Is it no wonder that most of us just end up floundering, not knowing where we are or where we are going? At risk from the elements and those that would give us bad advice, we are vulnerable to our whims and the selfish wishes of others that would take what we have.

Without a plan of action there is little chance that we will be properly prepared to achieve anything that we desire. Now this does not make what we are doing right or wrong, but when we leave home in the morning to work and we don’t know whether to turn right, left or go straight ahead once we reach the end of the drive way, then how can we be surprised at where we end up?

A personal mission statement may be something as simple as, I’m going to be a computer programmer. My family cannot afford to send me to college, so I will earn the money by working part time while I’m in school and taking on a full time job after I graduate. It is my goal to have my degree by the age of 23.

Mission statements don’t have to be really involved but they set a goal, a time frame for achievement and a way of accomplishing the goal.

Personal mission statements can also contain personal, ethical or moral statements about how you will conduct your activities such as, I will not steal, I will not kill, and I will not cheat or lie. I will reach my goals by not doing any of these things.

Setting one’s boundaries keeps us on the straight and narrow and the shortest route between to points is in a straight line.

Many fear that they will not be able to stay within the confines of a mission statement and this fear is well founded. As we mature our thoughts change about everything around us. How we wanted to do something five years ago may now seem impractical or we may have discovered a better way to do it, so personal mission statements need not be inflexible. Flexibility becomes important as we mature and move along our chosen path. But the flexibility should not take away from our ultimate goal. Sometimes it is important to move off the path periodically to be able to take a close look at where we are and know that we are heading in the best possible direction.

A vantage point may be achieved by taking a side trip and climbing that mountain so that we can see where we have come from and where we are going.

The biggest advantage of a personal mission statement is that we can make good sound decisions based on the criteria that we have set for ourselves in the statement. We will make fewer turns that do not work for us and will know where and when we have strayed.

Begin to rely on your intuition, test it and trust it. There is a saying that if you believe in nothing you will fall for anything. Don’t allow yourself to settle into a boxed belief system, remember that all organizations have their own agenda that includes keeping you in it. It is the very nature of humanity to move to the next better level. We all strive to better ourselves.

A good intuitive acknowledgement is always followed by a physical reaction. It is something you feel, usually in the pit your stomach. Once you have developed your intuition, it will never let you down, even if your decision leads you away from your goal, it will also bring you back. Sometimes the side trip just leads you away from a danger or pitfall.

Include in your mission statement a determination to develop your spiritual awareness. I don’t mean religious awareness. Remember religion is just humanity’s attempt to explain spirituality. You are spirit naturally and you don’t have to look for it. You just need to become aware of it and makes friends with it. It is that which is guiding you, and it is your personal guide and friend. Move with it and your life will run smoothly, lose contact with it and your life will become a struggle. It is an obvious gauge, and the farther you have moved away from your mission statement, the greater the struggle. Once you get back on track your life becomes easier.

March to the beat of your own drum. Do not listen to those that would tell you that you have set your goals too high. Misery loves company and people that you know including family will try to hold you back. People don’t like to be left behind. As you move along and declare yourself, you draw people to you that will support your statement. It is like magic, but they don’t come by accident, they come to you because you cause it to happen, because you have purpose and it is clear. All people come bearing gifts, although they are not always received. You do nothing alone whether you believe it or not.

Your success and your failure always depend on the people in your life, because they are there for only one purpose, for good or bad, to help you. Remember that a highly developed individual would never try to stop you from doing anything. They would offer guidance only should you make yourself available to receive it. Those that would hold you back are not offering you unconditional love, and their love is superficial and conditional.

In your personal mission statement include that you will never judge another for what they are or what they are doing, because you know that they also have their own personal mission statement and you may not know what that is. Freedom to allow another is the highest form of unconditional love, and you must respect that or not, depending on your statement.

Adapt a new philosophy of what works for you and what does not work for you. Move away from morality and moral statements. They are there to cause you to conform to someone else’s standards of behavior, by allowing you the opportunity to feel guilty about doing something that they do not approve of. Morality has never worked in the time of humanity and that is observable. The concept needs to be taken to a new level, but it is not yours to force any kind of change, but to simply demonstrate what works and what does not work in your life. People will notice your success and will want to emulate you.

You may suffer punishment by transgressing on someone else’s morality, but remember you are in the physical world and are not of it. If you are truly moving towards a higher level of awareness you will respect the freedom of others and allow them to believe as they will.

Funny, I am a writer that refuses to write. The mission statement needs to be written out no matter how much it pains you. It has obvious value and it is a guide only, which you may refer to later when you find yourself on a side trip. Important decisions are made within the parameters of what it is you want to achieve and how you want to go about it. The statement is your map and it needs to be written down.

The world is full of drifters, and they are obvious. There is nothing wrong in being a drifter if that is what you want to experience. I am not here to judge. There is nothing wrong with things not working in your life because you don’t have direction if this is what you wish to experience. There is nothing wrong with complaining and whining about your life, if this is what you desire. There is nothing wrong with blaming and pointing fingers if this is what you want. And there is certainly nothing wrong with being a victim or being victimized if you have chosen to experience that. But if none of it has worked for you, then you need to do something that does. You don’t keep hitting yourself over the head with the same hammer trying to get different results, move on!

However if you have chosen to be proactive in how you want to experience your life then you need to create a personal mission statement and write it down. Refer to it often, make changes as needed. You may change your mind about your ultimate experience later, but when you do, you will know where you are coming from and you will not make any further decisions that will take you back there. A P.M.S. (personal mission statement)… Hmmm, should not be painful but a joy, because it is the beginning of a new life. Maybe the pain comes from acknowledging that you are giving something up rather than starting something new, or maybe is just brings awareness, your new P.M.S. is a physical symbol of change, a cycle completed and a new one started.

With the adrenalin of creating something new, comes the inevitable pain of leaving something behind. Exploration takes a certain amount of courage and the rewards are huge if you are working from a map.

Your map may get you to where you want to be, but remember that it is the trip that counts and the time for picking up the treasure, you will not find it in the box where others have gone, someone beat you to it. A purpose driven life will always draw treasure to it and you do not need to dig it up. It will be handed to you because you will become aware that your life, the process, is the treasure.

Begin now to start your journey. It doesn’t matter what you present circumstances are, they are simply a starting point. Don’t wait till tomorrow, and the best time is while you are thinking about it.

Listen to the arguments that you have going on in your head now, and you will have a pretty good idea why your life is the way it is.

Your P.M.S. is the best bet you have now to get you out of the circumstances you now find yourself in and to move forward. Life is always a choice and so are the circumstances of your life.

When team members clash, disaster strikes. Project deadlines are missed, HR referees team members, the boss is angry for a week, and the raises everyone expects vanishes in the face of discord.

Which personality is in charge of rallying the team members? Can’t you tell from the noise? It must an Idealist!

Idealists

Idealist personalities make up 8-10% of the population and populate sales, psychology, and teachers positions. This personality really likes people.

Idealists are enthusiastic and have a knack for motivating team members. When one walks into the room, the energy level naturally goes up. When you need buy-in, bring in these cheerleaders.

This personality is an expert at stimulating conversation. Put them into a “dead” room and watch it come alive!

An Idealist is easily excitable. This can be a good or bad trait, depending on the circumstance. Although he/she may get the group going, they may end up showing off their impetuous side: talking when they shouldn’t, jumping to conclusions, or becoming impatient when decisions aren’t made fast enough.

When an Idealist feels their ideas are under attack, they will lash out and attack team players. This behavior ends up creating the opposite effect on the buy-in process.

As a supervisor, Idealists tend to lose focus and frustrate their employees. Employees may receive mixed messages depending on the supervisor’s mood or direction. On the other hand, some Idealists inspire and motivate their employees to new heights.

Supervisors can get better performance from an Idealist if they:

Encourage him/her to take a breath and think about things

Define his/her purpose in the group

Speak to them warmly and provide assurance/positive feedback on a regular basis.

Ask their advice on employee relations.

Remind them that so and so will be making the final decision.

Realize that waiting to respond to an issue with an Idealist is better than addressing it immediately. Time is the best ally in confrontation.

Idealists in Brief

Value to the Team: Idealists influence people.
Major Strength: Enthusiastic and motivates people.
Major Weakness: Impetuous and does not focus on all the facts.
Communication: Stimulates conversation.
Emotional Response: Excitable and Emotional.
Decision Making: Decides quickly and not always with the facts.
Behavior Under Stress: Idealists, when faced with high levels of stress, will go on the attack.
Being a Better Team Player: Idealists need to take a breath. Their excitement sometimes takes on a will of its own.
