As in many of the sports which are most popular among athletic people, accidents are possible with horseback riding. We can never completely remove an element of danger from active sports and I suppose riding isn’t up there near white water kayaking, scuba diving or driving in a car. Still we should try to reduce risks as much as possible. One of the easiest ways to cut down on serious accidents is by wearing a riding helmet. It is about as basic as strapping on your seatbelt and almost as easy to do. I have found that they are pretty comfortable and not onerous to wear. To call someone a coward because they wear one is simply ridiculous. Bravery is not to be confused with heedlessness and I see little merit in courting danger for no good reason. Head injuries are the worst kind because, unlike a broken leg, they often do not heal properly even if they are not mortal and recovery times can be very long at best. Wearing a good riding helmet can usually avoid, or at least mitigate, head injuries.

In view of the safety aspects of riding helmets it seems to me unpardonable that very few dude ranches require their guests to wear hard hats. No doubt they fear that they would turn away business if they insisted on this basic safety precaution. Probably they are right because many guests want to make a fashion statement with their Marlboro hats and a cigarette clamped between their steely jaws. Is it worth the extra business to have to live with the thought that you could have avoided even just one life changing head injury?
