Board Game Collectors

Board games are a terrific form of entertainment. Board games provide families and friends with a reason and an opportunity to spend time together. They also give people an opportunity to stretch their strategic thinking skills. And besides all that, playing board games is just plain fun. People need to play more often.

Board game collectors take playing board games a little more seriously than other folks. It’s a fun diversion for collectors, to be sure, but it’s also a part of the collector’s identity. The care and feeding of a board game collection can take hours of effort and hundreds or even thousands of dollars. But for a truly dedicated board game collector, it’s worth the effort.

I know a board game collector who has a very specific niche he targets – vintage Scrabble games. He owns a 1955 edition of Scrabble. He also owns a 1948 edition. And he also has a beautiful, but newer, deluxe wooden edition that is so beautiful that I’d hesitate to even play it. Of all the board game collectors I know, he’s the one who is the most obsessive, but he also collects in one of the most narrow niches.

Lots of people have weird hobbies. Collecting board games is just one of them. But it’s a pretty interesting one.
